FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Q: Where are the greywater dump points located?
A: Each Camp Kitchen has a dump point facing the adjacent amenity block . A longer hose is required as they are not close to the edge of the grassed area that has bollards surrounding them.

Q: Is there still cattle on El Questro land?
A: El Questro used to be a working Cattle Station. We no longer raise cattle on the station however there is free-roaming wild cattle on El Questro land. These cattle have been known to wander into the campground and private sites. We are managing the cattle when that happens. As the cattle are wild, please do not approach them as it can have fatal consequences.

Q: Are there crocodiles at El Questro?
A: Our rivers and water holes are occupied by both freshwater and saltwater crocodiles. For that reason, we strongly advise against swimming in any waters not specifically designated for swimming.

Q: Where can I go swimming at El Questro?
A: You can swim in any of the water holes along the hikes (El Questro Gorge, Amalia Gorge, Champagne Springs, and Emma Gorge) and in the water hole behind the Steakhouse Restaurant at the Station. We strongly advise against swimming in the rivers and any water holes that are not part of hikes.

Q: Do we have potable water?
A: Yes, we have potable water available at all powered sites and behind the General Store is an Amenity Block which has a tab that you can connect your water hose to for filling up your water tanks.

Q: How hard is the drive to Branko’s Lookout?
A: The drive to Branko’s Lookout will take you first through a water crossing that is between 200 and 500 mm (about 1.64 ft). The crossing itself will take between 5 to 10 min and should only be attempted by experienced 4WD drivers due to its difficulties. The rocks in the water are quite large and can lodge under the car stopping you from driving and doing damage. To minimise the possibility of damage they should have some exceptionally good Bash Plates installed underneath.

Q: Can you take a caravan to the private sites?
A: No caravans are allowed on the private sites due to access being extremely limited. The roads leading into the sites are quite windy, and narrow, with low-hanging branches and in general not designed for Caravans. Cars with Rooftop tents and trailers are fine.

Q: How many cars/people can fit onto a private site?
A: Sites can be booked for a maximum of 8 people, and you can fit (depending on set up and size) between 2 to 5 cars onto a site.

Q: Can you fish at El Questro?
A: No fishing is allowed at El Questro due to the rivers within being a Fish Sanctuary.

Q: Is the Pentecost River a tidal river and does it affect the water crossings?
A: Yes, the Pentecost River is a tidal river. The high tide does not affect the crossings to El Questro Station and the Gibb River Road. The only time when the tide would affect these crossings is during the height of the Monsoon season in December/January when the roads are closed anyway.

A: 700,000 Acres

Q: Do we allow swimming in the Pentecost River along the private sites?
A: No, we do not. The salties in the water might consider you a snack. Please advise guests that for safety reasons we do not allow swimming in the Pentecost River. As with all rules, we understand we cannot monitor these, but it is important that we say it to the guest. Guests can swim in the waterhole behind the Steakhouse and in the Waterholes along the hikes (not at Jackaroos or Pigeon Hole Waterholes).

Q: Why is Amalia a Grade 4 walk?
A: Due to the small area where you need to pull yourself up and the 2nd part where you hold onto a chain to walk along the ledge.

Q: What shoes should you wear?
A: Hiking boots are the best option for all walks, otherwise sneakers. We strongly discourage Thongs, Crocs, Reef Shoes, Ballerina. Anything that does not give support to the ankle.

Q: Do we offer dog sitting?
A: We have no official dog-sitting service, however guests can enquire with reception and see if any Staff will offer to dog sit if they are available.

Q: Do we have coin-operated washing machines?
A: Our machines are mainly card-operated however we have a selection of coin-operated machines.

Q: Why is there a weight limit for horse rides?
A: Horses are not built to carry people above the limit of 95 kg, to avoid injuries.

Q: Can we make a camping booking?
A: Guests are welcome to book their powered/non-powered campsites and private campsites in advance online via El Questro Camping Options. If you have any difficulties with your booking, please email us at elquestro.station@gdaygroup.com.au

Q: Do you have any powered campsites?
A: We have 60 powered campsites at The Station. Please book your powered campsite online in advance. Other camping options at The Station are unpowered sites and private sites. These can also be booked online.

Q: Can I bring a caravan to El Questro?
A: Whilst we do recommend off-road caravans and campers, many other caravans do make the trip into The Station. Note that there is a 16km unsealed section with two water crossings about 300-500mm in depth.

Q: Can I leave my caravan here while I explore the Gibb River Rd?
A: You can store your caravan or trailer at El Questro for $10 AUD per night, please note we take no responsibility for the van or contents while stored. Please enquire with elquestro.station@gdaygroup.com.au to check availability and prebook.

Q: Can I have a generator?
A: Generators are permitted in the general campground and the private campsites between the hours of 8:00am-8:00pm only.

Q: Can I bring my pets?
A: Dogs are allowed at El Questro's campsites; however, they must always be on a leash and any signs of antisocial behavior will result in a move on notice. Dogs are not allowed on any of El Questro's tours, activities or to any of our attractions.

Q: Is there a waste dump point for my caravan or trailer?
A: Yes, there are both grey and black waste dump points at The Station. Please enquire at Reception as to where they are located.

Q: Can I have a campfire?
A: Currently no campfires are permitted.

Q: Where can I source firewood from when you do allow campfires?
A: You can source fallen timber off the ground. Please be careful not to chop down dead trees or remove large hollow logs from the ground as they are often habitats for native fauna.

Q: Is there fresh drinking water available at the campsites?
A: There is a source of freshwater at the General Campground near the Station Store. At the private campsites, there is the Pentecost River. This is unpotable water and we recommend boiling before use. Please note that, due to our remote location, we recommend that you always carry enough water to get to your next destination comfortably.

Q: Do you sell Diesel & Unleaded Fuel?
A: We sell both varieties of fuel, other lubricants and oils at the Station Store. Please note that, due to our remote location, we recommend that you always carry enough fuel to get to your next destination comfortably.

Q: Am I able to get my tyres repaired and mechanical work done on my 4WD or trailer?
A: We can order replacement tires and our workshop is adept at tyre repairs. All other mechanical repairs need to be done in Kununurra.

Q: What is the road like?
A: The Gibb River Road from the Kununurra side to The Station Township's 'driveway' is completely sealed. The 'driveway' is a 16km unsealed corrugated section of road with two rocky water crossings into the Station, approximately 300-500mm in depth. We do recommend a high-clearance 4WD. We have a grader on the property that works on the road regularly to maintain its condition. Q: How far are the campsites to El Questro's attractions?
A: The Station Township, where the campsites are based, is 27km away from Emma Gorge Resort and Emma Gorge Walk, 10km from The Chamberlain Gorge, 25km from Explosion Gorge, and between 3 & 7kms from the rest of the gorge walks and hot springs.

Q: Do I need to bring cash with me?
A: We are cashless, EFTPOS facilities are available at all venues.

Q: I have my own boat with me, can I use it at El Questro?
A: At El Questro we have environmental guidelines that prevent outboard motors in our pristine freshwater river systems. We also do not allow canoes or kayaks due to the danger of Saltwater Crocodiles.
